There I was at home in 2024 after dropping off my kids, when I got the familiar feeling of ‘a song is coming’. I sat at my piano, ready to receive the words and music as I always did, although it hadn’t happened in a while.
Two verses flowed out of me in minutes, but as I read them over to get a sense of where the song was going, I realized this was no song - it was a story, a children’s story, about a blue dragon.
My usual MO would be to excitedly play out the movie of where this was going in all its splendour, then just as quickly, shelf it, move on and repeat. Writing a book had never crossed my mind and I’ve had so many ideas over the years, it almost became one more buried one but for whatever reason, I decided to approach this one differently. You only have two verses, don’t think of the worldwide release. First, see if you finish it. If you finish it, see if you like it. If you like it, then you learn what the next step is.
I finished it, and I adored it.
I lead a full life where my family are the most important thing to me so, once it was done, I will be honest and say I still didn’t think of doing anything with it, until December. I was looking back at all that had happened that year, a very Brazilian tradition, when I remembered the story, read it again and that was it. I looked over at my husband who instantly knew I was in trouble.
I love it so crazy much I simply had to release it to the universe. Even as a ‘grown up’, it gives me the best energy and a bounce in my step which I wanted - needed - to share.
Step by step has brought me to today where I write the back story to this new adventure I am so excited about!
This is a completely new journey and one which started off with a very small and simple plan: finish two verses. And now, here I am in the middle of a deep dive into the world of indie publishing and trying to create the best launch strategy to honour my character.
